About Me and the Information I Consume
About Me
Hello, My name is Finnegan and I am a student at Linn Benton Community College pursuing a transfer degree. I grew up in Corvallis and choose LBCC for its proximity and it's a good cost effective option to go to school and figure out what I want to study and do with my life. As far as why I choose Media and Society it was honestly mostly to fulfill a required credit for my degree. I choose it over the many other options because I think I can learn some very useful information and skills from the class and I am somewhat interested in journalism and I think this class will give me a good taste of some of the things journalists do and think about.
Something I'd consider myself passionate about is film. This year I'm trying to watch at least one movie a day, though its proved harder than I thought and I often don't have time to watch a film. Some of my favorite films include Submarine, The Lobster, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Swiss Army Man, and Hunt for the Wilder people. If you haven't seen any of them I would highly suggest it. Another thing I'm passionate about is music. My favorite band of all time is The Strokes for nostalgic purposes but also because they are simply the greatest. A under appreciated song I would recommend to everyone is The Rat by The Walkmen. It has great energy and a passion I think everyone can resonate with despite preferred generas. The silly picture I've included comes from a beach trip I went on with my friends this spring break. The trip combined two of my favorite things: my friends and the ocean. I think the world would be a better place if everyone spent more time at the coast and more time with their friends.
The Information I Consume
I would say my three main sources of information are Instagram, YouTube, and NPR. Embarrassingly I hear about most of the current events through Instagram while I am mindlessly scrolling. Most of the time its not even a retelling of the event, but just a joke referencing it. I take what I hear about from Instagram with a grain of salt and rarely pass it on. On YouTube I watch a popular political commentator and I get a lot of my information about current political events from them. The one I watch is reputable and has a background in political science. They also always link articles to what they are referencing. I do understand a lot of what they talk about is also very opinionated so I try to be carful to separate fact from that. I also know that everyone says something incorrect from time to time so maybe next time I share something I heard from them I should do some more research myself. I don't read that many articles but often my family members will share NPR articles with me or about stuff they heard on the NPR radio. Don't tell my family, but I almost never thoroughly read them before dryly responding with, "wow that's crazy" or, "I've never thought about it like that."
