How Indie Films Become Important

Image
Introduction: Still from  SLC Punk!, James Merendino, 1998 How many films, out of all the films you've seen in your life, do you remember? Which ones stuck with you? What movies do you consider important in your life? Chances  are its not a big Hollywood blockbuster, but rather an indie film. Even if its not there's almost definitely an indie film you've connected to and enjoyed. When I asked my friends, family and even some strangers what movie was most important to them I got answers like  La Haine, The Perks of Being A Wallflower, Whiplash, Everything Everywhere All at Once,  Velvet Goldmine, SLC Punk!  etc. Why is it this way? What is it about these films that make us love them so dearly? I think it important to define what an indie film is before I write a whole blog post about them. Indie films or independent films are movies produced outside of the usual major film studios created by independent filmmakers. They typically have a lower budget and are usual...

A Review of For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women) by Japanese Breakfast

Image
Introduction  Despite being strawberry blonde and a man, I thoroughly enjoyed Listening to  For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women). I've listened to and enjoyed all of Japanese Breakfast's albums so far and I was glad to find out that their latest release was no exception. I choose this album mainly because I was listening to it as I was reading the project instructions and thought it lined up to perfectly not to do it. I also chose it because I find joy in sharing music I like to others. Below is a video of Japanese Breakfast performing a song off of their new album live on The Tonight Show. Description For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women) is the latest release from the indie pop band Japanese Breakfast. She was born in South Korea and raised in Eugene Oregon. Japanese Breakfast started as a solo project of Zauner's...

My Thoughts on the Netflix Series Adolescence

Image
Describe:  I watched the Netflix crime and drama series Adolescence . The show stars actor on the rise Owen Cooper as Jamie Miller, Stephen Graham, the co creator and who you may know from his roles in  Snatch (2000) and This Is England (2006) as Eddie Miller, Ashley Walters known for being a member in the rap group So Solid Crew and for his role in Top Boy (2011-2013) plays DI Luke Bascombe, and Christine Tremarco from The Leaving of Liverpool (1992) and Swallow (2001) as Manda Miller. The first episode throws you into the nightmare of being woken up by a police raid. The Millers are scared and confused as the police take Jamie into custody on murder charges. The episode follows the chaotic process of getting booked and interrogated. Jamie denies it and his dad Eddie obviously believes him until the police show them a video of him committing the crime where the episode ends with both of them crying. The entire episode is shot in one continuous take, no cuts, no edits. In fac...

About Me and the Information I Consume

Image
About Me  Hello, My name is Finnegan and I am a student at Linn Benton Community College pursuing a transfer degree. I grew up in Corvallis and choose LBCC for its proximity and it's a good cost effective option to go to school and figure out what I want to study and do with my life. As far as why I choose Media and Society it was honestly mostly to fulfill a required credit for my degree. I choose it over the many other options because I think I can learn some very useful information and skills from the class and I am somewhat interested in journalism and I think this class will give me a good taste of some of the things journalists do and think about.  Something I'd consider myself passionate about is film. This year I'm trying to watch at least one movie a day, though its proved harder than I thought and I often don't have time to watch a film. Some of my favorite films include Submarine, The Lobster, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Swiss Army Man, and Hunt for t...
